The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has applauded Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, and Sokoto State Governor, Almad Aliyu Sokoto, for paying a surprise visit to its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre. The group described the visit as a courageous and compassionate gesture that reflects the continued support for Kanu across diverse political and ethnic lines.
According to a statement by IPOB’s spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, the organization also expressed appreciation to Hon. Obi Aguocha and other notable Igbo personalities, including members of the Igbo community residing in Sokoto, who accompanied the delegation during the visit.
The group reiterated that Kanu is being held as a “prisoner of conscience,” and maintained that his continued detention should not diminish the momentum of the Biafra self-determination movement. IPOB noted that individuals committed to justice, fairness, and freedom will continue to identify with Kanu, regardless of his location or circumstances.
IPOB further stressed that the Nigerian government has a fundamental responsibility to ensure Kanu’s safety while in detention. The group warned that any harm, whether intentional or accidental, would have serious consequences, given Kanu’s status as a leader respected by millions of people.
The statement emphasized that IPOB remains committed to a non-violent pursuit of Biafra self-determination, and urged authorities to protect the peaceful nature of the movement by guaranteeing the security of its leader.
Reiterating its appreciation, IPOB thanked Governor Otti, Governor Sokoto, Hon. Aguocha and all others who demonstrated solidarity by visiting Kanu. The group described the visit as a morale-boosting act that reinforces the belief that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not abandoned, despite being held in custody.
“May God bless you for your courage,” Comrade Emma Powerful stated, reaffirming IPOB’s resolve to continue advocating for a peaceful referendum that allows the people of Biafra to decide their political future.
