Former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, has reportedly been taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja, according to confirmation from his former media aide, Fred Chukwulobe.
Ngige, 74, was said to have appeared at the EFCC headquarters earlier today. However, the commission has not yet disclosed the reason for his detention, leaving room for intense public speculation and political debate.
The development comes barely two weeks after armed attackers targeted Ngige’s convoy in Anambra State, an incident that resulted in the death of a police officer and heightened concerns about his security. The fresh EFCC action has stirred further national attention, given Ngige’s longstanding influence in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Dr. Ngige served as Anambra State Governor and later as Minister of Labour and Employment until 2023. A prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), he remains one of the party’s most notable political leaders in the Southeast.

Reactions have been sharply divided. While some commentators see the EFCC move as part of ongoing anti-corruption efforts, others view it as possible political intimidation. As the nation awaits an official statement from the EFCC, the situation continues to generate widespread discussion.
