The Abia State Government has completed the comprehensive restoration of the ancestral home of the late Chief, Senator, Dr. Jaja Anucha Wachuku, CON, a revered Nigerian nationalist and one of the country’s founding fathers. The project was executed under the administration of Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti as part of a broader initiative to preserve historic landmarks and honour national icons.

In addition to rebuilding and retrofitting the historic residence, the state government also constructed a new access road leading into the compound. This development has significantly improved access to the site, located in Nbawsi, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, enhancing its prominence and accessibility for visitors and residents alike.

The intervention comes just ahead of Dr. Wachuku’s 108th posthumous birthday, which the Abia State Government is set to commemorate at the restored residence. The event forms part of ongoing efforts to celebrate individuals whose leadership and sacrifices played a defining role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic foundations.

Legacy of Jaja Wachuku

Dr. Jaja Wachuku was a distinguished nationalist, diplomat, and statesman. He made history as Nigeria’s first Speaker of the House of Representatives, later served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, and represented the country as its Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Widely admired for his eloquence and principled leadership, Wachuku was instrumental in Nigeria’s early parliamentary governance and international engagement.

According to the state government, the restoration project underscores its commitment to safeguarding Abia’s cultural heritage, preserving historical memory, and recognising figures who contributed immensely to national development. Community members have praised the initiative, describing it as a timely and fitting tribute that ensures Dr. Wachuku’s legacy is preserved for future generations.
