The Abia State Government has reacted to comments credited to the Senator representing Abia North Senatorial Zone, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, in which he reportedly pledged to secure the Abia State Government House for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.

In a press release issued on Monday, the state government acknowledged Senator Kalu’s constitutional right to support and promote his preferred candidate, including his younger brother, for the 2027 governorship race under the Abia APC. However, it stressed that the ultimate decision on who governs Abia State rests solely with the people.

The government cautioned against any attempt to dominate the political space through what it described as a “family fiefdom,” warning that Abians would resist efforts by any individual or family to simultaneously control multiple strategic political and public service positions. These, the statement noted, include the offices of Senator, Governor, Commissioner representing Abia State in the National Assembly Service Commission, and Ambassador.

Reaffirming its position as the ruling party in the state, the Labour Party disclosed that it has more than three capable, credible, and well-prepared aspirants poised to contest for the party’s ticket for the Abia North Senatorial seat in the 2027 elections.

According to the government, these aspirants reflect the party’s commitment to inclusive leadership and democratic competition.

The statement further assured that, at the appropriate time, the Labour Party would mobilize its members, supporters, and stakeholders across the state to rally behind its chosen flagbearer in Abia North. It also called on all Abia citizens to reject any form of political monopoly and instead support a future anchored on fairness, collective progress, and people-centered governance.

The press release was signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Governor of Abia State, Mr. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, and dated January 5, 2026.
