The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has been thrown into deeper uncertainty following the resignation of Hon. (Barr.) Phillip Okey Igwe, a prominent party leader and former governorship contender in the state.
Igwe, who was the deputy governorship candidate to the late Prof. Uche Ikonne during the 2023 general elections, formally announced his decision to leave the PDP in a resignation letter dated January 6, 2026. The letter was addressed to the party chairman of Amuda Ward in Umunneochi Local Government Area.
In his message, Igwe attributed his exit to what he described as the steady and unavoidable breakdown of the party’s internal structure. He explained that the decision was reached after extensive consultations with political allies, party stakeholders, and supporters across Abia North and other parts of the state.
Political analysts view Igwe’s departure as a major setback for the Abia PDP, noting that it reflects broader dissatisfaction among influential members who were instrumental in the party’s last governorship campaign. His exit is widely seen as part of a growing loss of confidence in the party’s leadership and direction.
Sources within Abia’s political landscape have revealed that Igwe is expected to formally align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the coming days. If confirmed, the move could significantly alter the balance of opposition politics in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Igwe’s resignation carries symbolic weight, given his strategic role during the 2023 election and his close association with the late Prof. Ikonne. Observers argue that his departure highlights persistent internal divisions, leadership disputes, and a lack of coherent strategy within the PDP.
As alternative political platforms, particularly the ADC, gain momentum, Igwe’s anticipated defection may encourage further exits from the PDP, weaken its grassroots base in Abia North, and accelerate political realignments across the state.
For many observers and party loyalists, the pressing concern is no longer whether the Abia PDP is in trouble, but how much of its structure and influence will remain intact in the months ahead.
