The Rivers State House of Assembly has formally commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, marking a significant escalation in the state’s ongoing political crisis.

At a plenary session, the Leader of the House, Major Jack, read out allegations of gross misconduct leveled against the governor. The impeachment notice, reportedly endorsed by 26 lawmakers, signals strong legislative backing for the process. Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, confirmed that the formal notice of gross misconduct will be served on Governor Fubara within the next seven days, in line with constitutional provisions.

In a related development, the Assembly also initiated impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu. According to the Speaker, lawmakers plan to issue a separate notice of gross misconduct against the deputy governor within the same seven-day timeframe.

As part of its resolutions, the House has declined to receive or consider the presentation of the 2026 budget by Governor Fubara until the impeachment process is concluded. Lawmakers insist that addressing the allegations of gross misconduct must take precedence over legislative business.

Speaking on the floor of the House, Speaker Amaewhule vowed that the Assembly would pursue the impeachment to its logical conclusion. He described Governor Fubara’s administration as a threat to democratic governance in the state and stressed that the lawmakers were duty-bound to uphold the constitution.

“We will see this impeachment process through.”

“We will see this impeachment process through,” the Speaker declared, adding that if the Assembly fails in its constitutional responsibility, resignation would be the honorable option.

The unfolding impeachment proceedings are expected to shape Rivers State politics in the coming days, as attention turns to the governor’s response and the constitutional steps that will follow.
