Political tension is rising in Abia State following reports of a private meeting allegedly involving former governors and key political allies at the residence of ex-Governor Theodore Orji. The development has sparked strong reactions, particularly from Hon. Obi Aguocha, who represents Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Reacting to the reported gathering, Aguocha warned against what he described as renewed attempts by entrenched political interests to regroup and impose decisions on Abians through behind-the-scenes arrangements. He stressed that the state has outgrown an era where elite agreements were used to override the will of the electorate.
“Abia is not for political gang up,” the federal lawmaker declared, emphasizing that no amount of private consultations or closed-door alliances can invalidate the collective choice of the people. According to him, Abians have become more politically aware and are no longer willing to accept leadership imposed through backroom dealings.
Aguocha described the reported meeting as a reflection of an outdated political culture marked by exclusion, influence peddling, and control of public resources by a small group of powerful actors. He noted that such practices are at odds with the growing public demand for transparency, accountability, and people-centred governance in the state.
He further cautioned that any attempt to undermine Abia’s current democratic direction would face strong resistance from the people. “Abians are politically conscious and alert. They understand the difference between governance that serves the people and politics driven by personal interests,” he said.
The lawmaker stressed that the future of Abia must be determined through open political engagement, constructive opposition, and respect for democratic institutions, rather than secret meetings aimed at reclaiming lost relevance. He argued that politics should be anchored on ideas, service delivery, and practical solutions, not on decisions taken by a few individuals in private settings.
Aguocha also called on political stakeholders across party lines to embrace healthy democratic competition and respect the mandate freely given by voters. According to him, sustainable progress in Abia can only be achieved when leaders focus on governance and tangible development rather than political distractions.
“Democracy is strengthened when leaders respect the verdict of the people and act responsibly,” he added, noting that Abia deserves peace, stability, and purposeful leadership.

Reaffirming his commitment to the people of his constituency and Abia State as a whole, Aguocha pledged to continue defending democratic values and inclusive governance. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and actively engaged in the political process, stressing that the ultimate responsibility for safeguarding Abia’s political future lies with the people.
