APC Lawmaker Calls for National Assembly Shutdown Over Escalating Insecurity
APC lawmaker Alhassan Doguwa calls for National Assembly shutdown over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and rising violence nationwide.
The lawmaker representing Kano State in the National Assembly, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has called for the temporary suspension of legislative activities in protest against Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.
Doguwa, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum Resources, described the current situation as “horrific” and likened it to a “war against humanity.” He lamented that many communities, including his own constituency, are grappling with persistent attacks, kidnappings, and killings.
According to him, farmers are abandoning their farmlands due to fear of violence, traders are avoiding local markets, and economic activities across several regions have been severely disrupted. He compared the security conditions in parts of his constituency to the notorious Sambisa Forest, long associated with insurgent activity, saying residents now live in constant fear of daily abductions.
The APC lawmaker proposed what he termed a “legislative emergency,” suggesting that the National Assembly should suspend regular proceedings to fully confront the deteriorating security landscape. He questioned the rationale of continuing routine legislative business while citizens endure widespread violence and loss.
His remarks come amid fresh attacks in Zamfara State that reportedly claimed dozens of lives. Nationwide, February alone recorded over 300 violent deaths, further fueling public frustration and bipartisan concerns over the state of national security.
Doguwa’s outspoken address, delivered while visibly wearing an APC cap, has drawn mixed reactions but earned praise from some quarters for its candor. Observers note that his position reflects growing unease within political circles, including members of the ruling party, over the urgent need for decisive action to curb insecurity.
