Abia Moves Forward with Azumini Sea Port Project, Orders Accelerated Feasibility Study

Abia State has taken a significant step toward boosting its economic and maritime potential following a high-level meeting with a delegation from China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC), led by Mr. Nicolas Liu. The discussions focused on the proposed Azumini Obeaku Sea Port and Inland Waterways Corridor project an ambitious initiative expected to reshape the state’s commercial landscape.

During the meeting, the state government approved the immediate commencement of a feasibility study for the project. While the company initially proposed a six to seven-month timeline to complete the study, the government has directed that the process be fast-tracked to ensure quicker progress and early implementation.

In addition to the feasibility study, steps are already being taken to secure the necessary approvals from key federal authorities, including the Presidency, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), and the Federal Ministry of Blue Economy. These approvals are critical to advancing the project from the planning stage to execution.

To ensure the project’s practicality and sustainability, the CHEC team has been encouraged to conduct an on-site assessment of the proposed location. The Azumini area’s proximity to the high sea presents both opportunities and technical considerations, particularly in relation to dredging and infrastructure requirements.

The proposed sea port and inland waterways corridor is expected to serve as a major economic catalyst for Abia State, opening up new trade routes, attracting investments, and creating employment opportunities. Beyond the state, the project is also positioned to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s broader maritime and blue economy ambitions.
