The Abia State Government is set to record another major milestone in sustainable development as Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, formally commissions the state’s newly acquired electric buses on Monday, December 22, 2025.
The commissioning ceremony will take place at the International Conference Centre (ICC), Umuahia, by 1:00 p.m., and will be performed by the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti. The event marks Abia State’s bold entry into clean energy-powered mass transportation and smart urban mobility.
The electric buses initiative is a flagship project of the Otti administration, aimed at modernising public transportation, cutting carbon emissions, reducing fuel and maintenance costs, and offering residents a safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly transit system. The project aligns with the governor’s broader agenda of innovation-driven governance, climate responsibility, and people-focused development.
With the deployment of electric buses for mass transit, Abia State becomes the first sub-national government in Nigeria to introduce electric vehicle (EV) buses into its public transport system. This achievement places the state among a select group of forward-looking governments adopting green transportation solutions in line with global best practices.
Beyond the buses themselves, the commissioning event will also highlight the supporting charging infrastructure and operational framework established to guarantee efficiency, durability, and long-term value for the state. These systems are designed to ensure seamless operations and sustainability of the electric transport initiative.
Under Governor Otti’s transformative leadership, Abia State continues to set new benchmarks in governance by implementing practical, future-ready solutions that address local needs while contributing to global climate goals.
