The Abia State Government has announced the official rollout of its Electric Vehicle (EV) mass transit bus service, marking a significant milestone in the state’s drive toward modern, sustainable, and affordable public transportation.

The initiative aligns with the earlier commitment made by Governor Alex Otti during the handover ceremony of the state’s mass transit buses. As part of the pilot phase, four EV buses commenced operations on December 24, 2025, providing free intra-city transport services to residents.

According to the announcement, two of the buses are deployed to Umuahia, while the remaining two are operating within Aba. In Umuahia, the designated pilot routes include Isi-Gate to Ubakala and Okpara Square to Express Tower. In Aba, the buses are plying Osisioma to Aba Park, as well as Park to Ala-Oji via Port Harcourt Road.

In addition to intra-city operations, the EV buses have also begun free inter-city services, with two daily trips running between Umuahia and Aba and returning to Umuahia. This move is expected to ease transportation costs for commuters while improving mobility between the two major cities in the state.

Each bus is operated by a trained pilot and a co-pilot to ensure safety and efficiency. Commuters are conveyed on a first-come, first-served basis and are advised to comply with instructions from the bus crew to ensure a smooth and pleasant travel experience.

The state government noted that the EV mass transit scheme is a learning process for all stakeholders involved. While minor challenges may arise during this early stage, residents are encouraged to show patience, understanding, and support as the government introduces this new era of public transportation in Abia State.
The announcement was signed by Prince Okey Kanu, Commissioner for Information, on December 24, 2025.
