Abia launches cashless Green Shuttle system with Abia Connect Card to modernize transport and improve commuter experience statewide.
The Abia State Government has officially introduced a cashless payment system for its Green Shuttle Bus Service, marking a major step toward smarter urban mobility. The rollout of the Abia Connect Card signals a new phase in the modernization of public transportation across the state.
Driven by the administration of Alex Chioma Otti, this initiative is designed to create a seamless, transparent, and technology-driven commuting experience for residents. The program is being implemented through the Ministry of Transportation as part of broader reforms aimed at improving infrastructure and service delivery.
The Abia Connect Card, also known as the Abia State Card, replaces cash payments with a simple tap-and-go system. This transition eliminates common challenges linked to cash transactions such as delays, disputes over change, and revenue leakages.
Commuters can now board buses quickly and securely by tapping their cards on the payment device, with a “Welcome” sound confirming successful payment.
To encourage widespread adoption, the first card is currently being issued free of charge to residents. Cards can be collected at designated Green Shuttle terminals and approved agent locations across Aba and Umuahia.
In Aba, collection points cover major routes including Osisioma Junction to Park, Opopo Junction to Park, Park to Flyover, and Flyover to Osisioma. In Umuahia, residents can obtain cards along Ubakala to Isigate, Isigate to Tower, Isigate to Secretariat (JAC Building), and Isigate to Ohafia routes.
Prospective users are required to present their ABSSIN to receive the card. Those without an ABSSIN can register online via the Abia Pay platform to generate their number before visiting distribution centers.
After funding the card, commuters are required to tap the device upon boarding. A minimal ₦50 top-up charge applies during funding. Importantly, the card does not expire, and funds loaded onto it remain valid without time restrictions.
The Green Shuttle Service continues to operate both inter-city and intra-city routes at affordable rates.
Inter-city fares include Aba–Umuahia–Aba at ₦800 and Umuahia–Ohafia–Umuahia at ₦1000.
Within Umuahia, a flat rate of ₦150 applies to routes such as Ubakala–Isigate, Isigate–Tower, Isigate–Secretariat/JAC Building, and Isigate–Ohafia.
In Aba, commuters also enjoy a ₦150 flat rate across routes including Osisioma Junction–Park, Opopo Junction–Park, Park–Flyover, and Flyover–Osisioma Junction.
According to the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, the cashless system is designed to strengthen accountability and efficiency within the transport sector. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the ongoing free card distribution and become part of the state’s digital transport transformation.
