Abia lawmaker Anderson Akaliro leaves APC for Labour Party, citing internal crises and praising Governor Alex Otti’s development-focused leadership.
In a major shake-up in Abia State politics, Hon. Anderson Akaliro, the Member representing Umuahia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Labour Party (LP).

Akaliro, who also chairs the House Committee on Public Petitions and Judiciary, submitted his resignation in a letter dated September 2025 to the APC Chairman of Umuahia North LGA. In the letter, he cited deepening internal crises, factional disputes, and weak leadership within the APC as reasons for his defection.
The lawmaker – who was the only APC representative in the Abia State Assembly after the 2023 elections – said he was consistently sidelined and excluded from party meetings and decision-making processes. He also condemned the frequent suspensions and counter-suspensions of APC officials at ward and local government levels, calling it evidence of “deep-rooted disunity” in the party.

After consulting with his constituents and political allies, Akaliro announced his move to the Labour Party, describing Governor Alex Otti’s administration as “visionary and development-driven.” Political observers view his defection as a principled decision rooted in loyalty to his constituents rather than party loyalty.
This development is seen as a major blow to the APC in Abia State, while simultaneously strengthening the Labour Party’s influence under Governor Otti’s leadership.
