The Abia State Government has announced plans to collaborate with the Republic of Uganda to strengthen and expand Micro, Small, and Medium-Scale Enterprises (MSMEs) across both regions.
Governor Alex Otti disclosed this on Thursday, October 30, 2025, while receiving a delegation from the Ugandan High Commission led by Ambassador Philip Ocham Odida at the Government House, Umuahia.
Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to empowering small businesses, describing MSMEs as the “backbone of Abia’s economy.” He emphasized that Abia remains Nigeria’s hub of innovation, craftsmanship, and entrepreneurship especially in the production of shoes, fabrics, and high-quality fashion items that can compete globally.
“When it comes to MSMEs, the capital is here in Abia. If you’re looking for creativity, innovation, and skill, look no further than Aba and Abia State,” Governor Otti stated.
“Our people don’t need handouts or palliatives; they need an enabling environment to thrive. That’s why we are investing in infrastructure, power supply, security, and urban renewal,” he added.
The Governor directed top government officials, including the Commissioners for Industry and SMEs, and Trade and Commerce, to liaise with the Ugandan delegation to design a framework for the partnership.
“Beyond trade, we are looking at real partnerships identifying areas where both sides can exchange ideas, resources, and opportunities for mutual benefit,” he noted.
Ambassador Philip Ocham Odida, in his remarks, described Abia as “a rising center of innovation, enterprise, and economic dynamism in Nigeria.” He explained that Uganda seeks to build a sustainable and mutually beneficial bridge with Abia, particularly in the MSME sector, which he noted drives economic growth in both countries.
Odida also praised Governor Otti’s visionary leadership and prudent management of resources, which he said have made Abia an attractive destination for international cooperation.
Present at the meeting were the Commissioner for Industry and SMEs, Mazi Mike Akpara; Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Dr. Salome Obiukwu; Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade and Commerce, Chief Nwaka Inem; and DG, Bureau of Public-Private Partnership and Investment Promotion, Mr. Chinedum Chijioke, among others.
Governor Otti reaffirmed his government’s readiness to continue fostering a business-friendly environment that attracts both local and international investments.
