Akpabio says Nigeria’s elections have improved since PDP’s exit, alleging some Anambra figures crafted fake court documents abroad in 2023 polls.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has declared that Nigeria’s electoral process has seen significant improvement since the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) left power. Speaking during a recent session at the National Assembly, Akpabio noted that despite challenges, the conduct of elections in recent years shows measurable progress compared to past administrations.
According to the Senate President, the 2023 general elections demonstrated a new level of transparency, even though political disputes eventually reached the Supreme Court. He referenced the legal controversy surrounding the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) vote, describing it as one of the most debated electoral issues in recent times.

“In the last election, we even had to go up to the Supreme Court arguing about whether winning the FCT alone qualifies someone to be President,” Akpabio said. “That shows how far we have come elections are no longer business as usual.”
However, the Senate President also revealed that certain individuals, allegedly from Anambra State, were involved in questionable activities abroad during the 2023 polls. Without naming them, Akpabio claimed that these individuals traveled overseas to prepare what he described as “documents that couldn’t even be folded,” which were later submitted to the courts after the elections.
Political observers view Akpabio’s remarks as a subtle jab at opposition figures who challenged the results of the presidential election. His comments add to the ongoing national discourse about electoral integrity, judicial processes, and the evolving nature of Nigeria’s democracy since 1999.
