Senate President Godswill Akpabio has taken a swipe at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing it as a “platform in disarray” that no rational politician would dare to contest under in its current state.
Speaking during a Senate session, Akpabio addressed Senators Henry Seriake Dickson and Abdul Ningi, both of whom have longstanding ties with the PDP. He reminded them that the PDP of the past was once stable but has now been torn apart by internal conflicts and leadership crises.
“Senator Ningi, at that time, the PDP was not torn to shreds. But today, there’s no sane person who would go to such a platform because you’re heading straight into litigation. Who will even sign your form?” Akpabio remarked, drawing laughter from some senators present.
The Senate President’s statement underscores the deepening divisions within the opposition party, which has struggled to maintain unity since the 2023 general elections. His comments also reflect the growing dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which continues to attract former PDP members and consolidate political power across the country.
Political observers see Akpabio’s remarks as both a jab at the PDP’s current instability and a broader commentary on Nigeria’s shifting political landscape ahead of the next election cycle.
