The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Abia State chapter, has declared total confidence in Governor Alex Chioma Otti, formally endorsing his leadership and second-term ambition.
The endorsement followed a solidarity visit to the Abia State Government House on Thursday, where all 17 local government chairmen in the state converged to publicly affirm their support for the current administration. The mayors, who were all present in person, unanimously passed a vote of confidence on Governor Otti, citing his performance and governance record since assuming office.
Speaking on behalf of the group at the conference hall of the Chief of Staff to the Governor, ALGON Abia Chairman, Hon. Chinedu Ekeke, said the association was compelled to address recent political statements and meetings organized by what he described as actors from a failed past who are unsettled by the ongoing transformation in Abia State.
Ekeke noted that while ALGON respects the constitutional rights of all citizens to freedom of expression and political association, the achievements of Governor Otti’s administration remain visible and verifiable across the 17 local government areas. According to him, the governor has demonstrated clear commitment to good governance, fiscal discipline, and effective service delivery.
He highlighted key areas of progress under the current administration, including road recovery and construction, rehabilitation of healthcare and educational facilities, prompt payment of salaries and pensions, clearance of salary backlogs, and prudent management of public resources.
The ALGON chairman further observed that Abia State has witnessed a renewed sense of pride among its citizens, both at home and in the diaspora. He attributed this to the restoration of public confidence in the state’s leadership and improved governance image, after years of institutional decline.
“As custodians of grassroots governance, our members interact daily with communities across the state and can attest to the growing public confidence and the tangible benefits being experienced by our people,” Ekeke stated.
He emphasized that leadership in a democratic system must be determined by performance and the freely expressed will of the electorate through credible elections, not by political pronouncements, speculation, or alliances. He added that public discourse should be anchored on facts rather than exaggerations or revisionist narratives.
ALGON Abia State, he said, considers it inappropriate for any individual or group to attempt to preempt the democratic process or undermine the visible progress being recorded in the state through divisive rhetoric. According to him, the discomfort expressed by some political actors stems not from poor governance, but from the clear contrast between the achievements of the present administration and the records of previous governments.
Ekeke called on all political stakeholders, past and present, to engage constructively by offering ideas, policies, and alternative visions that promote development, unity, and stability in Abia State. He reaffirmed ALGON’s commitment to supporting policies and programs that strengthen local governance, deepen institutional development, and improve the quality of life across all local government areas.
Concluding, the ALGON chairman stated that the future of Abia State firmly rests in the hands of its people, whose collective judgment must always be respected.
