APC wins five of six FCT chairmanship seats as PDP takes Gwagwalada; Wike and Tinubu hail results amid mixed public reactions.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged dominant in the latest chairmanship elections across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), clinching five out of the six area councils in a contest marked by low voter turnout and intense political messaging.

According to results announced after the February 21 polls, APC candidates secured victories in Abaji, AMAC, Bwari, Kuje, and Kwali Area Councils. The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed to retain Gwagwalada, preventing a clean sweep by the ruling party.

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the FCT, described the outcome as a strong endorsement of the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He attributed the APC’s performance to ongoing infrastructure projects and administrative reforms in the capital territory, arguing that voters responded to visible development rather than campaign theatrics.

In a pointed remark aimed at critics, Wike dismissed what he called superficial political strategies, stating that electoral success is not achieved through roadside gestures but by demonstrating tangible achievements to the electorate. His comments have since generated widespread debate online, with supporters praising his political strategy and critics raising concerns about economic hardship, food prices, and unemployment.

President Tinubu congratulated the newly elected chairmen, linking their victories to the groundwork laid by the FCT administration. Political observers say the results could further reshape power dynamics in the capital, especially as grassroots leadership often influences broader national political trends.

Despite the APC’s strong showing, analysts note that voter participation remained relatively low, highlighting the need for increased civic engagement in future elections. As the newly elected council chairmen prepare to assume office, attention will likely turn to how campaign promises translate into governance outcomes across the FCT.
