ASUU zonal branches issue a strike ultimatum to the Federal Government over unmet demands, warning of a nationwide university shutdown by November 21.
Nigeria’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has once again raised concerns over the state of negotiations with the Federal Government, warning that another nationwide strike could begin as early as November 21. The union’s zonal branches issued the ultimatum after months of stalled discussions surrounding the 2009 renegotiated agreement, unpaid academic allowances, and persistent underfunding of public universities.
ASUU noted that although it suspended its last industrial action in October 2025 following assurances from government representatives, most of the commitments made have yet to be fulfilled. Union leaders accuse the government of employing delay tactics and failing to demonstrate genuine commitment to addressing long-standing issues affecting university education.
According to ASUU, the continued neglect of critical funding and welfare demands has left both lecturers and students in a precarious situation. If the government does not act promptly, millions of students across federal and state universities may once again face academic disruption, deepening the ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s higher-education system.

With the ultimatum now in place, stakeholders are urging both parties to return to the negotiation table to prevent another shutdown of university campuses nationwide.
