As Nigeria celebrates its 65th Independence Anniversary, Hon. Obi Aguocha, the lawmaker representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency, has urged both leaders and citizens to make justice and equity the foundation of national progress.
In his Independence Day message, Aguocha reflected on Nigeria’s journey since 1960, describing it as a mix of triumphs and challenges. He emphasized that the nation’s future can only be secured through fairness, inclusiveness, and good governance.

“True independence is not just about celebration,” he said, “but about ensuring that every Nigerian enjoys dignity, due process, and equal treatment under the law. At 65, Nigeria must come of age by placing justice and equity at the heart of our development.”
The lawmaker highlighted that issues of imbalance and marginalization have fueled division and mistrust in the country. He stressed that genuine reconciliation and healing can only occur when government policies reflect fairness, inclusivity, and respect for all citizens.
Citing his consistent advocacy on matters affecting Nigerians, including the detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Aguocha noted that his stance is not about elevating an individual but about upholding justice and the principles of democracy.
“Silence in the face of injustice is complicity,” he stated. “Our democracy must rest on fairness and equity for every Nigerian.”
Hon. Aguocha further called on leaders to rise above ethnic and partisan sentiments, urging them to embrace selflessness and a commitment to serve the people. According to him, leadership at this stage of Nigeria’s history must focus on building inclusive structures that guarantee opportunities for all citizens, regardless of background.
While commending Nigerians for their resilience and patriotism despite the nation’s challenges, Aguocha expressed optimism that the country can still fulfill its destiny as Africa’s giant.
“The hope of Nigeria lies in our ability to unite under justice and equity. If we choose fairness over favoritism and sincerity over selfishness, then our nation will surely rise,” he affirmed.
Concluding his message, he called on citizens to remain hopeful and committed to nation-building:
“Happy Independence Day, Nigeria!”
