Atiku Abubakar condemns the Senate’s rejection of electronic transmission of election results, calling it a betrayal of democracy and transparency.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticized the Nigerian Senate following its decision to reject the real-time electronic transmission of election results, warning that the move poses a serious threat to democratic integrity in the country.

In a statement reacting to the development, Atiku described the Senate’s action as a betrayal of democratic principles, arguing that it undermines transparency, credibility, and public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system. According to him, rejecting electronic transmission opens the door to manipulation and weakens efforts aimed at delivering free, fair, and credible elections.

The former presidential candidate stressed that modern democracies around the world are increasingly adopting technology to enhance electoral transparency and reduce fraud. He noted that Nigeria should not be moving backward at a time when citizens are demanding greater accountability and trust in governance.

Atiku further warned that the Senate’s decision could deepen public skepticism toward the electoral process, especially among young voters and civil society groups who have consistently advocated for reforms that promote openness and fairness.
He urged lawmakers to reconsider their stance and align with democratic best practices that reflect the will of the people.

According to Atiku, embracing real-time electronic transmission of results is critical to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and restoring confidence in elections.
