In a significant victory for the people of Abia State, the House of Representatives has passed the Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ikwuano, after scaling through its third reading. The bill, sponsored by Hon. Obi Aguocha, Member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/South Federal Constituency, seeks to bring quality and affordable healthcare services closer to the people of Ikwuano and its neighboring communities.

The proposed legislation aims to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system by addressing the long-standing gap in medical infrastructure within Abia State’s rural and semi-urban regions. Once established, the Federal Medical Centre, Ikwuano will serve as a major healthcare hub equipped with modern medical facilities, emergency units, maternity wards, laboratories, and specialized clinics for both preventive and curative care.

Hon. Obi Aguocha, the sponsor of the bill, expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their overwhelming support, describing the development as a “turning point for equitable healthcare delivery in the South-East.”

“This bill reflects our collective determination to ensure that no Nigerian, regardless of location, is denied access to quality healthcare. Ikwuano deserves a federal medical facility that meets modern standards and serves as a center for medical excellence,” said Hon. Aguocha.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Health Institutions, Hon. Patrick Umoh, also commended the bill’s intent, noting that it aligns with the federal government’s broader goal of expanding healthcare infrastructure across the country. He emphasized that the new FMC would not only enhance healthcare access but also create employment opportunities and promote medical research and training in the region.

Lawmakers across party lines lauded the initiative, acknowledging that the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Ikwuano would ease the burden on existing facilities in Umuahia and other parts of Abia State.

Following the successful passage at the third reading, the bill will now proceed to the Senate for concurrence before being transmitted to the President for assent. Once signed into law, the Federal Medical Centre, Ikwuano, will join the growing network of federal healthcare institutions dedicated to improving the nation’s public health system.

This legislative milestone has been celebrated across Abia State as a transformative achievement one that promises better healthcare access, economic growth, and improved living standards for residents of Ikwuano and surrounding communities.
