Nnamdi Kanu’s trial stalled as he claims lack of access to case file, court adjourns hearing to October 27 for defence preparation.

The ongoing terrorism trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was on Friday halted at the Federal High Court in Abuja, following claims that he was denied access to his case file.

Kanu, who recently dismissed his legal team led by former Attorney-General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi (SAN), and chose to represent himself, told the court he could not proceed with his defence due to the inability to review his case documents while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

When the matter came up, prosecuting counsel Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) reminded the court that the day had been scheduled for Kanu to open his defence. However, taking the stand, the IPOB leader explained that those tasked with delivering his case file to him were denied access by DSS officials.

He therefore requested a brief adjournment until Monday, October 27, to allow him adequate time to access his case materials and prepare his defence properly.

Kanu also informed the court of plans to call witnesses from the United Kingdom, the United States, Kenya, and Ethiopia, and pleaded for permission to receive visitors over the weekend to facilitate his preparation.

The prosecution did not object to the plea. Consequently, Justice Omotosho directed the DSS to permit Kanu to receive visitors on Saturday and Sunday, ensuring he could consult with them before resuming trial.

The court subsequently adjourned the case to October 27, emphasizing that the six days allocated for Kanu’s defence would not be extended.
