Rivers State is currently facing heightened tension due to the emergence of alleged evidence revealing irregularities in the Supreme Court’s recent ruling concerning a political matter in the state. This situation has prompted a pro-Wike lawmaker to switch parties.
The Supreme Court’s decision regarding intra-party disputes in Rivers State had faced backlash, but no substantial evidence of misconduct had come to light—until now. Leaked documents and reported inconsistencies in court submissions have raised doubts about the fairness of the ruling.
In reaction to these developments, Hon. Darlington Nwauju, a prominent supporter of Minister of the FCT Nyesom Wike, has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC). During a press conference in Port Harcourt, Nwauju expressed his disillusionment with the judicial system and worries about the state of democracy.
“I can no longer be part of a system that undermines justice and fails the trust of the people,” Nwauju remarked.
This defection may exacerbate the ongoing crisis within the PDP and potentially impact the party’s prospects in future elections.
While the Supreme Court has yet to provide an official response, civil society organizations and opposition leaders are demanding an independent investigation into the ruling.
