A significant step toward administrative restructuring in Abia State was recorded as the House of Representatives progressed with a bill seeking to create two new local government areas Ikwuano North and Ikwuano South from the existing Ikwuano Local Government.
The proposed legislation, titled “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), to Create Ikwuano North and Ikwuano South Local Governments from Ikwuano Local Government in Abia State and for Related Matters (HB.2592)”, successfully passed its Second Reading.
Sponsored by Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha, the bill aims to enhance grassroots governance, improve access to public services, and reflect the growing administrative and developmental needs of the Ikwuano region. Aguocha expressed gratitude to his colleagues for supporting the bill, describing the development as a victory for the people of Ikwuano and Abia State.
He reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that the bill advances to subsequent legislative stages, eventually leading to full constitutional recognition of the two proposed local government areas.
