Electricity has finally returned to several communities in Bende Federal Constituency, Abia State, following the commissioning of a rehabilitated power line project by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu.
The intervention ends more than two decades of power outage that began in 2002.
The newly completed project reconnects Uzuakoli and Ozuitem towns to Nigeria’s national grid, restoring reliable electricity to residents who have long relied on generators and solar alternatives. For over 23 years, the absence of public power supply had slowed economic activity and limited growth across the area.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Bende, Benjamin Kalu described the development as a historic breakthrough and a personal fulfillment. He recalled that earlier efforts to restore electricity to the constituency had failed, despite heavy investments, but stressed that the current project succeeded because of firm commitment and persistence.
The Deputy Speaker emphasized that the return of electricity would significantly boost local economic activities. According to him, small businesses that previously struggled with high energy costs will now thrive, while cottage industries and manufacturing firms are expected to emerge, creating jobs and improving livelihoods within the constituency.

Kalu also issued a strong warning against vandalism of the newly installed power infrastructure. He called on community leaders, including traditional rulers, Presidents-General of autonomous communities, and youths, to take collective responsibility for protecting the facilities. He encouraged the formation of local vigilance groups to ensure the sustainability of the project.
Expressing gratitude, Kalu noted that darkness had finally given way to light in Bende, marking a new chapter of development and economic revival for the people of the constituency.
