Woman caught swapping elderly man’s ATM card at Polaris Bank Ikorodu, Lagos, exposing rising ATM fraud targeting vulnerable Nigerians.
There was commotion at a Polaris Bank branch in Ikorodu Garage, Lagos, on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, after a young woman was caught attempting to defraud an elderly customer by swapping his ATM card.
Eyewitnesses said the woman had approached the unsuspecting man under the guise of assisting him with his bank transaction. In the process, she allegedly replaced his original ATM card with a counterfeit one and hurriedly attempted to withdraw money from a nearby ATM.
The elderly man, however, noticed the suspicious act almost immediately and raised an alarm, drawing the attention of bank officials and other customers. A brief confrontation ensued as the suspect tried to flee, but security personnel quickly intervened and restrained her until the police were called in.
Although authorities have yet to confirm an official arrest, the incident has reignited public concern over the growing menace of ATM-related fraud in Nigeria. Experts continue to warn customers, especially elderly people, to be cautious and avoid accepting unsolicited help during banking transactions.
