Speaking during a press conference marking his second year in office, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, represented by the commission’s Director of Legal and Prosecution, Sylvanus Tahir (SAN), dismissed claims that the former governor is being protected because of his reported defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Olukoyede stressed that the EFCC operates independently and without political interference, emphasizing that no individual is above the law regardless of political affiliation.

“Someone asked whether politicians who defect to the ruling party are shielded. The simple answer is no,” he stated.
“To the best of my knowledge, the case involving the former governor of Delta State is still under investigation, and in due time, justice will be served.”

The EFCC boss explained that the commission prefers to conduct thorough investigations rather than rush cases to court, a move he said ensures stronger prosecution and credible outcomes.

“We have had situations where cases were hurriedly taken to court, leading to poor outcomes. We want to avoid that. When we finally present the case in court, Nigerians will understand the facts clearly,” Olukoyede added.

He further reiterated that under his leadership, the EFCC would not shield any suspect or compromise investigations for political or personal reasons, affirming that the agency’s loyalty remains to the Nigerian people and the constitution.
