Former NEXIM MD Robert Orya has been sentenced to 10 years in prison over a ₦2.4bn fraud case, following his conviction by an Abuja court.
A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has convicted Robert Orya, a former Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM), over a massive ₦2.4 billion fraud linked to his tenure at the bank.
The conviction was secured on Wednesday, February 5, 2026, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Orya, who headed NEXIM between 2011 and 2016, was found guilty on 49 criminal counts bordering on fraud, corruption, and abuse of office.
According to the EFCC, the former bank chief approved over ₦1.4 billion in fictitious loan facilities to a company he allegedly controlled using false identities. Investigations revealed that the loans were never repaid, resulting in significant losses of public funds.
Justice F. E. Messiri of the FCT High Court sentenced Orya to 10 years imprisonment on each of the 49 counts. The cumulative sentence amounts to 490 years; however, the court ruled that all sentences would run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of 10 years in prison.
