The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has called on Nigerians to promptly report loan apps and businesses that intimidate or harass them over unpaid debts. According to the commission, no consumer should be subjected to threats, humiliation, or fear when resolving financial obligations.
In a new public advisory, the FCCPC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumer rights in Nigeria’s growing digital lending sector. It warned lending platforms and debt recovery agencies against abusive practices such as sending threatening messages, unauthorized contact with borrowers’ relatives, or publicly shaming customers over unpaid loans.

The commission further explained that it has set up complaint channels and is actively investigating companies violating Nigeria’s consumer protection laws. Nigerians who experience harassment from lenders are encouraged to file reports directly with the FCCPC to trigger enforcement actions.

This move comes amid rising complaints about unethical debt recovery tactics by some digital lending companies operating in the country. The FCCPC stressed that consumer protection remains a top priority and reassured the public that any company found guilty of harassment will face sanctions.
By urging citizens to speak out, the FCCPC aims to create a safer and fairer lending environment where borrowers can address debts without intimidation or fear.
