The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has issued a strong public warning over the growing number of fire outbreaks linked to electrical surges and overloading, following three major fire incidents recorded within just 32 hours in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The incidents resulted in estimated losses of over ₦650 million, raising renewed concerns about poor electrical safety practices in homes and business premises.
The most recent fire outbreak occurred in the early hours of Monday, January 19, 2026, at Corner Shops located on Chalyx Close, Abacha Road, Maraba, along the Abuja–Keffi axis. The fire affected six retail shops and was reported at about 2:51 a.m. to the Federal Fire Service National Headquarters, Garki Station, by ASP Abdulmalik.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Station Commander, SF Agbo, immediately deployed firefighting teams, with additional support from the FFS Nyanya Station. Although the alert came late, firefighters were able to contain the blaze swiftly, preventing it from spreading further. Property valued at approximately ₦100 million was salvaged from assets estimated at ₦400 million exposed to the fire.
The Maraba incident occurred just 14 hours after a fire outbreak at the Kugbo Furniture Market and barely 18 hours after another fire at Leventis Plaza. Preliminary investigations indicate that all three incidents were likely caused by electrical surges, highlighting a disturbing pattern of preventable fire disasters.
Thanks to the prompt response of the Federal Fire Service and collaborating emergency agencies, properties worth over ₦2.8 billion were saved from destruction across the three incidents.
Reacting to the situation, the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, cautioned residents and business owners to adopt safer electrical habits. He emphasized the importance of switching off electrical appliances when not in use and avoiding the overloading of power sockets.
According to him, the fires, which led to losses of ₦650 million within a short time frame, could have been avoided through simple preventive actions. He stressed that basic safety measures such as turning off switches can make a significant difference in preventing fire outbreaks.
The Federal Fire Service reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the country and urged the public to take fire safety seriously to reduce avoidable disasters. The agency also reminded citizens that early reporting of fire incidents allows for faster intervention and minimizes losses.

Members of the public are advised to report fire emergencies promptly through the Federal Fire Service emergency line on 0803 200 3557.
The statement was signed by DCF P. O. Abraham, National Public Relations Officer and Head of Corporate Services, Federal Fire Service, National Headquarters, and dated January 20, 2026.
