Federal Government donates livestock vaccines to Abia State to curb animal diseases, boost productivity, and strengthen food security.

The Abia State Government has received a consignment of livestock vaccines from the Federal Government as part of efforts to strengthen animal health services and improve livestock productivity across the state.

The vaccines were supplied through the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The delivery was coordinated by the National Project Coordinator, Dr. Sanusi Abubakar.

Abia State is among seven beneficiary states selected to receive the vaccines under the ongoing nationwide intervention. The handover was conducted on behalf of the national coordinator by Lukman Alhassan, an Animal Husbandry Assistant under the livestock productivity programme.

According to Alhassan, the vaccination exercise forms part of the L-PRES transboundary animal disease control initiative. He explained that the programme is designed to prevent and manage major livestock diseases, boost animal productivity, protect the livelihoods of farmers and pastoralists, and support national food security.

Receiving the vaccines on behalf of the state, the Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Vitus Nwoko, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and the L-PRES project for their support. He noted that the intervention would significantly enhance Abia’s capacity to combat transboundary animal diseases.

Dr. Nwoko assured that the Ministry of Veterinary Services is fully prepared to commence mass vaccination exercises across the state, adding that the vaccines would be used efficiently to safeguard livestock and improve animal health outcomes. He also emphasized that the donation arrived at a critical time for the state’s livestock sector.
