FG mandates Mathematics as a compulsory O-Level subject to boost education quality and student competitiveness nationwide.
In a significant move aimed at improving academic standards across the country, the Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that Mathematics will now be a compulsory subject for all students preparing for O-Level examinations.
According to the government’s directive, no student irrespective of their field of study will be exempted from taking Mathematics in national examinations such as WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB. The decision is part of the government’s broader education reform strategy designed to strengthen students’ analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Speaking on the policy, the Minister of Education emphasized that Mathematics forms the foundation for innovation and national development, noting that every student must possess basic numeracy skills to succeed in modern society.
He added that the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with examination bodies and state governments, will ensure proper implementation of the new directive and support teachers with training and resources to make Mathematics more engaging and less intimidating for students.
This policy shift has sparked discussions among educators, parents, and students, many of whom see it as a step toward raising the quality of education and preparing Nigerian students for global competitiveness.
