The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially reacted to the recent statement by the United States government concerning religious freedom in Nigeria and the reported redesignation of the country as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) under the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja and signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Nigerian government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to combating violent extremism and protecting the rights of all citizens, regardless of their faith, race, or ethnicity.

The statement condemned the actions of extremist groups whose violence, the government said, has been fueled by “special interests” seeking to sow division and instability across the West African and Sahel regions. It emphasized that Nigeria continues to mourn the victims of such attacks while saluting the courage of its armed forces for their ongoing fight against terrorism and insurgency.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria will continue to defend all citizens, irrespective of race, creed, or religion,” the ministry declared.

The government also underscored Nigeria’s deep respect for religious tolerance, diversity, and inclusion — values it says are consistent with global democratic principles. “Like America, Nigeria has no option but to celebrate the diversity that is our greatest strength,” the statement read.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s diplomatic ties with the United States, the Ministry described the U.S. as “a close ally” and expressed confidence that the bilateral relationship would remain strong. It further noted that under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria would maintain its “laser focus and steadfast commitment” to peace, stability, and freedom for all.

The statement concluded by stressing Nigeria’s position as a God-fearing nation that continues to uphold the rule-based international order and mutual respect among global partners.
