The Federal Government has issued an urgent weather alert forecasting heavy rainfall and potential flooding across 15 states and 69 communities between September 24 and 28, 2025.
According to the National Flood Early Warning Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment, the advisory was signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department. The alert emphasizes the need for immediate preparedness to minimize the impact of the expected flooding.

The warning identifies several high-risk states, including Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, Imo, Kano, Katsina, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Zamfara. Notable communities listed in the advisory include Yola, Yenagoa, Warri, Benin City, Oguta, Kano, Jibia, Akure, Oyo, Ahoada, Shagari, Serti, and Gusau.
“The heavy rainfall forecast for these locations may result in flooding in the identified communities and their surrounding areas,” Bokani stated. “Stakeholders are therefore advised to prepare adequately and take preventive actions to safeguard lives and property.”
The Ministry noted that this alert is part of its regular early-warning system to mitigate risks during Nigeria’s rainy season. Residents, local governments, and emergency response teams have been urged to implement precautionary measures, including clearing drainage systems, relocating from flood-prone zones, and staying informed through official updates.
