FIFA fines Nigeria and DR Congo over fan misconduct during a dramatic World Cup playoff in Rabat, with laser pointer and pitch-throwing incidents.
World football governing body FIFA has imposed fines on both Nigeria Football Federation and Congolese Association Football Federation following fan-related misconduct during the tense World Cup playoff clash between Nigeria national football team and DR Congo national football team.
The disciplinary action stems from incidents that occurred during the dramatic playoff match held in Rabat, Morocco on November 16, 2025.
According to FIFA’s disciplinary ruling, Nigeria’s football federation was fined 1,000 Swiss francs after spectators were found to have thrown objects onto the pitch during the match. The sanction was issued under Article 17 and Article 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which addresses violations relating to order and security at football matches.
Meanwhile, the Congolese federation received a steeper fine of 5,000 Swiss francs after fans were reported to have used laser pointers and similar electronic devices during the game. FIFA stated that the action violated Article 17.2.d of the disciplinary code, which prohibits the use of devices capable of disrupting players, officials, or the flow of the game.
The playoff encounter itself was filled with tension and controversy. After a fiercely contested match, the DR Congo national football team eventually secured victory through a penalty shootout, earning a spot in the March 2026 inter-confederation playoffs scheduled to take place in Mexico.
Following the match, the Nigeria national football team lodged a protest alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players. However, FIFA dismissed the complaint, allowing the Congolese side to retain their qualification.
Adding further drama to the aftermath, Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle made controversial remarks, accusing officials on the DR Congo bench of engaging in “voodoo” during the match. His comments sparked debate among fans and observers while highlighting the emotional intensity surrounding the fixture.
