The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has officially announced a major reform in Nigeria’s tax identification system, confirming that the National Identification Number (NIN) will now function as the Tax Identification Number (TIN) for individual taxpayers across the country.

According to the tax authority, Nigerians who already possess a valid NIN issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) no longer need to apply separately for a Tax Identification Number. Under the new framework, the NIN automatically serves as an individual’s unique tax identifier, eliminating duplication and reducing administrative bottlenecks. In the same update, FIRS disclosed that registered businesses will now use their Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration numbers as their official tax identification numbers. This means companies and other registered entities are no longer required to obtain a standalone TIN, as their CAC number will be fully integrated into the national tax system.

The policy shift is part of FIRS’ broader effort to streamline tax administration, enhance data harmonisation across government agencies, and improve tax compliance nationwide. By linking tax records directly to existing identity and business registration databases, the agency aims to curb tax evasion while making compliance easier for individuals and corporate bodies.

FIRS urged Nigerians and business owners to ensure their NIN and CAC records are accurate and up to date, noting that these identifiers will now be central to tax assessment, filing, and other statutory obligations.

The development marks a significant step toward digital governance and a more efficient revenue system, reinforcing the government’s commitment to simplifying processes and strengthening Nigeria’s tax infrastructure.
