Gov. Alex Otti launches Abia’s Duct Infrastructure Project to boost internet connectivity and create over 200,000 digital jobs.
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has officially performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the West Indian Ocean Cable Company (WIOCC) Abia State Duct Infrastructure Project, a landmark initiative designed to transform internet and digital connectivity across the state.
The event, held at the Aba South Local Government Headquarters, marks a major step in the governor’s agenda to position Abia as a leading technology-driven economy in Nigeria.
In his address titled “Taking Tomorrow,” Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a modern, interconnected digital ecosystem that supports the deployment of high-speed broadband technology and reliable digital services. According to him, the underground duct system will serve as the foundation for a digital economy, driving innovation, communication, and collaboration across all sectors.
“Our goal is to create a new culture of digital interaction among students, teachers, patients, government institutions, and the public,” Otti stated. “This project will not only enhance connectivity but also generate over 200,000 direct and indirect jobs through enterprise development and partnerships.”
The governor added that while the project would begin in urban centers, no community will be left behind, assuring that within 12 to 18 months, homes, schools, and businesses across the state will enjoy access to broadband-powered infrastructure.
Governor Otti emphasized that technology is the backbone of modern governance, crucial to reforms in education, healthcare, civil service productivity, security, and business growth.
Speaking earlier, Engr. David Kalu, Commissioner for Science, Technology, and Innovation, described the project as part of a technological revolution that is reshaping governance under Otti’s leadership.
Dr. Ayotunde Coker, Managing Director of WIOCC, highlighted that his company has been building digital infrastructure across Africa for nearly two decades. He commended Governor Otti’s visionary approach to inclusive economic growth, noting that the Abia Duct Infrastructure Project would “break barriers and build new opportunities” for the people.
Other dignitaries at the event included religious and traditional leaders, business stakeholders, and members of the Abia State House of Assembly.
The groundbreaking ceremony signifies Abia State’s bold entry into the digital future, setting the stage for enhanced connectivity, smart governance, and global tech partnerships.
