The Governor highlighted that the theme of the new Legal Year, “Reforming Abia State Justice Sector in the Digital Era,” aligns perfectly with his administration’s vision of modernizing the state’s justice system. He reiterated his commitment to maintaining the independence of the judiciary, emphasizing that the executive has not interfered in judicial operations, including recent judicial appointments.

“I’m happy to support the digital transformation of our judicial sector. I have approved the Attorney General’s request to digitize court processes and move away from the old practice of handling paper files,” Governor Otti stated.

He further revealed that the ongoing construction of 17 new court halls across Abia’s 17 local government areas is nearing completion, with several already ready for commissioning. Otti praised the collaboration between the executive and judiciary, assuring continuous government support in ensuring timely and fair justice delivery.

In her remarks, the Chief Judge of Abia State, Justice Lilian Abai, said the Legal Year celebration was an opportunity for judicial officers to rededicate themselves to the pursuit of fairness and justice. She called for continued reforms to strengthen the judiciary’s capacity in the digital era, noting that technology, innovation, and integrity remain vital to restoring public confidence in the justice system.

Justice Abai also expressed appreciation to Governor Otti for his administration’s unwavering support and commitment to the digital transformation of the judiciary.

Delivering the sermon titled “Are You Not Provoked by Our Present-Day Justice System?”, the Chaplain of Queen Elizabeth Hospital Chapel, The Very Rev. Ernest Onyeukwu, urged judicial officers to confront the challenges facing Nigeria’s justice sector. He condemned the rising incidents of injustice and extortion by law enforcement agencies and called for moral courage in upholding the rule of law.
