Abia Governor Alex Otti raises NYSC allowance up to ₦50,000 and implements CONHESS for health workers, boosting youth empowerment and healthcare workforce capacity.
Abia State is witnessing a new era of youth empowerment and professional workforce support as Governor Alex Otti, OFR, has approved a landmark increase in monthly allowances for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state. For the first time in nearly three decades, the allowance for Corps Members has been raised from its long-stagnant ₦4,000 to up to ₦50,000 depending on their place of primary assignment and professional category a boost of over 1,150%.
With the Federal Government’s recent adjustment placing the standard NYSC stipend at ₦77,000, the Abia State Government will now provide a ₦20,000 monthly base allowance for all Corps Members serving in the state. In addition, those posted to state government institutions will receive a ₦10,000 top-up, while Corps Members in teaching and medical fields will earn an additional ₦30,000. This strategic incentive aims to attract talent to critical sectors, especially education and healthcare, where manpower shortages have persisted due to years of neglect.
Transforming NYSC Experience in Abia
Governor Otti’s commitment goes far beyond financial support. His administration has also upgraded the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende Local Government Area, improving internal road networks, providing power facilities, renovating buildings, and offering better logistical support all despite the camp being a Federal Government property.
The Governor has maintained that any institution within Abia, whether state-owned or federal, deserves attention because the people of Abia benefit directly from the improvements.

A Commitment to Talent Development
Corps Members have long contributed significantly to Abia’s progress across sectors such as engineering, law, education, and healthcare. Governor Otti’s administration believes in harnessing these skills and creating opportunities for growth. One standout example is Mr. Benson Ojeikere, a Corps Member retained after his service year, who later rose to become the Head of Service in Abia State a clear testament to the value of rewarding competence and dedication.
Extending CONHESS to Strengthen Healthcare Delivery
In addition to supporting NYSC members, Governor Otti recently implemented the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for health workers across the state, extending coverage to local government healthcare facilities. This ensures that health professionals in Abia now receive salaries aligned with Federal standards, boosting morale and promoting workforce stability.
Building Sustainable Institutional Capacity
With education and healthcare accounting for 35% of the state’s total budget, the Otti administration is deliberately investing in the most critical sectors for long-term development. The goal is clear: create a competent, well-motivated workforce and build world-class institutions capable of serving future generations.
Governor Alex Otti’s reforms continue to signal a new direction one rooted in fairness, merit, and people-centered governance. For youth corps members, professionals, and communities across Abia, the message is unmistakable: service is valued, excellence is rewarded, and the future is being built today.
