Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has announced that his administration is set to launch the Waste-to-Wealth Initiative, a sustainable project designed to convert waste materials into valuable resources and economic opportunities for the state.

Speaking during the October edition of “Governor Alex Otti Speaks to Abians” at the Government House, Umuahia, the Governor revealed that Abia has made significant progress in waste management since he declared a state of emergency on waste disposal at the beginning of his tenure.

“We are now moving to the next stage of waste management proper treatment, recycling, and turning waste into wealth,” Otti stated. “Extensive studies show that while the process may be costly, it has enormous benefits. Like in Austria and other European countries, we can transform waste into gas, methane, and even power.”

The Governor disclosed that Abia State has begun discussions with local and international partners and has already signed partnership agreements to ensure the successful implementation of the initiative. The flag-off ceremony is expected soon.

In addition to the waste-to-wealth project, Governor Otti confirmed that his administration has finalized plans to acquire Afro-Beverages, located along the Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway. This follows the State’s recent acquisition of Star Paper Mill.

“Our offer to acquire Afro-Beverages has been accepted by AMCON. We will complete payment in seven installments starting next month. Once documentation is finalized, the State will assume ownership,” he said.

Governor Otti explained that these acquisitions are part of his government’s broader economic revitalization strategy. He emphasized that the state does not intend to directly run these businesses but rather partner with private experts to restore them as productive enterprises and major employers of labor.

“Government’s role is to enable not to own. We aim to revive these companies as key industries that create jobs for our youth,” the Governor noted.

On the social development front, Governor Otti announced that 4,000 additional teachers will be recruited before the end of the year to bridge the gap in the education sector. He also disclosed plans to demolish and reconstruct dilapidated school buildings across the state.

In the health sector, the Governor revealed that the ongoing recruitment of health professionals has attracted applicants from within and outside Nigeria, assuring that the process remains transparent.

Dr. Otti urged Abians to remain security-conscious and promptly report any suspicious activities to relevant authorities. He concluded by directing that the November edition of his monthly media chat be held at the newly remodeled Michael Okpara Auditorium.
