In a recent live interview on Arise TV, Distinguished Hon. Obi Aguocha-MHR, the lawmaker representing Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South Constituency in Abia State, expressed grave concern over the escalating wave of defections from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Aguocha warned that the ongoing trend threatens Nigeria’s democratic framework and legislative stability.
Hon. Aguocha revealed that the APC is now just four defections away from securing an absolute majority in the Senate, a shift that would empower the ruling party to dictate legislative decisions without meaningful resistance from the opposition. Such a scenario, according to the lawmaker, could undermine Nigeria’s multiparty system and centralize legislative power.
“The rate at which lawmakers, particularly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are crossing over to the APC is alarming. It weakens the opposition’s ability to influence or block critical bills, leaving the legislative process vulnerable to domination by a single political force,” Aguocha explained.

The lawmaker further described the situation as dangerous for democracy, stressing the importance of maintaining checks and balances within the National Assembly. “If the Senate loses just four more opposition members, the APC will have absolute control and can push through any legislation they desire without opposition,” he stated.
Despite the troubling trend, Distinguished Hon. Obi Aguocha-MHR expressed hope in the integrity and commitment of many lawmakers across both chambers of the National Assembly. He emphasized his belief that if a constitutional crisis were to emerge, legislators would rise above party affiliations to defend the nation’s constitution.
“I believe the members of the National Assembly, both in the Senate and the House of Representatives, are objective people. If push comes to shove, they will stand in defense of the Constitution,” Distinguished Hon. Obi Aguocha-MHR affirmed.
Hon. Aguocha’s remarks have sparked widespread debate across Nigeria’s political landscape, with analysts warning that the growing dominance of the APC through defections could weaken Nigeria’s multiparty democracy. Critics argue that an unchecked majority could threaten transparency, accountability, and pluralism in the legislative process.
As the 2027 general elections approach, the impact of these defections on Nigeria’s political structure remains a topic of intense discussion, with observers closely watching the evolving dynamics in the National Assembly.
