A new step toward strengthening grassroots governance in Abia State has been taken as Hon. Obi Aguocha, representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, presented the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2025 (HB.2592), which has now passed its first reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to create Ikwuano North and Ikwuano South Local Government Areas from the existing Ikwuano LGA in Abia State. The proposed alteration aims to bring governance closer to the grassroots, ensure balanced development, and enhance effective representation within the region.

According to Hon. Aguocha, the creation of the new LGAs will help improve administrative efficiency, promote social inclusion, and stimulate economic growth in Ikwuano communities. The bill will proceed to the next legislative stages, including public hearings and debates, before potential passage and constitutional adoption.
This initiative is seen as part of broader efforts to decentralize governance and strengthen democratic structures across Nigeria.
