The Nigerian House of Representatives has fixed Tuesday, February 17, 2026, for an emergency plenary to deliberate on issues arising from the newly released 2027 general election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

According to an official statement issued by House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi, the decision underscores the constitutional weight and national implications of the electoral schedule. INEC recently announced February 20, 2027, as the date for the presidential and National Assembly elections, setting the stage for preparations toward the next general polls.

The emergency session was formally communicated to lawmakers through an internal memo from the Speaker’s office. The Nigerian House of Representatives is expected to examine legislative matters connected to the timetable and consider necessary actions to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic framework.

INEC’s comprehensive schedule also outlines key milestones ahead of the 2027 elections. Party primaries are slated to take place between July and September 2026, while Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) is scheduled to commence in April 2026. These timelines have sparked fresh conversations within political and legal circles about possible amendments to the Electoral Act before the polls.

Rep. Rotimi assured that deliberations would be handled with urgency, emphasizing the importance of full attendance by lawmakers given the far-reaching impact of the electoral calendar on political stakeholders and the electorate.

The development signals heightened legislative attention on electoral preparedness as Nigeria begins early groundwork for the 2027 general elections.
