AU Summit 2026: Nigeria Secures Permanent Seat on African Central Bank Board
Nigeria has recorded major diplomatic milestones at the 39th Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU), reinforcing its leadership in Africa’s economic integration, peace, security, and democratic governance.
At the heart of the achievements is Nigeria’s successful bid for a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank. The development marks a significant step in shaping Africa’s emerging financial system and monetary future. With this decision, Nigeria will also serve on the Board of the African Monetary Institute through its Technical Convergence Committee, a key body working toward the establishment of the continental central bank.
This milestone reflects Nigeria’s strong economic standing, technical expertise, and longstanding commitment to Africa’s monetary integration agenda. Analysts view the appointment as a strategic boost to the country’s influence in determining fiscal and monetary frameworks that will guide the continent’s financial architecture.
In the area of regional stability, the summit also recorded progress as candidates endorsed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) secured election into the AU Peace and Security Council. The outcome underscores the unity and cooperation among West African nations and highlights their collective resolve to promote peace and security across Africa.

Nigeria further strengthened its diplomatic footprint by convening a Ministerial High-Level Panel on Regional Partnerships for Democracy. The session attracted ministers, senior officials, and delegates from across Africa and the international community.
Discussions centered on strengthening democratic institutions, encouraging inclusive governance, and deepening regional collaboration to sustain democratic values on the continent.
These achievements reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to the core principles of the African Union, particularly in advancing economic integration, institutional development, peacebuilding, and democratic governance.
