Senate President Godswill Akpabio has opened up about his controversial 2019 senatorial election, alleging that he was denied justice despite a court ruling in his favor.
Speaking on Thursday, Akpabio recounted how the electoral process in 2019 was marred by irregularities that cost him his rightful victory. According to him, the court not only nullified the election results but also ordered the prosecution of the electoral officials responsible for the alleged malpractice.
However, Akpabio expressed disappointment that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to carry out the court’s directive as expected. “I was cheated in the 2019 elections, and we went to court. The court annulled the election and ordered the prosecution of the electoral officer, but instead of prosecuting the INEC commissioner, they prosecuted the returning officer,” he said.
The Senate President’s revelation sheds new light on the internal controversies that followed the 2019 polls, which were characterized by numerous petitions and legal battles across the country. His statement reignites discussions about electoral accountability and the need for stricter enforcement of judicial rulings related to election misconduct.
Political observers believe Akpabio’s account highlights ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s electoral system, especially concerning the implementation of court orders and the prosecution of electoral offenders.
