As Nigeria’s 2027 general elections approach, former presidential candidate Peter Obi has intensified his call for electoral accountability, issuing a strong warning to those responsible for counting votes.
Speaking at a high-energy rally in Akwa Ibom State, Obi addressed supporters during an event marking the alignment of the state’s Obidient Movement with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The gathering formed part of his ongoing nationwide tour following his exit from the Labour Party, as he positions himself and his supporters ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a viral moment captured on video, Obi declared that any official who refuses to properly count votes in 2027 would be held accountable. “In that polling booth in 2027, if they don’t count it, we will count the person,” he said, drawing loud cheers from supporters waving banners and chanting slogans.
The rally reflected lingering frustrations from the 2023 presidential election, which Obi formally challenged in court, alleging irregularities. Although the courts upheld the result, many of his supporters remain vocal about the need for deeper electoral reforms and stricter vote monitoring mechanisms.
Obi’s recent statement has sparked mixed reactions nationwide. Supporters describe it as a firm demand for transparency and vigilance in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Critics, however, argue that such rhetoric could heighten political tensions at a time when electoral stakeholders are advocating calm and institutional reforms.
Political analysts note that Obi’s strategy appears focused on mobilizing grassroots participation and emphasizing vote protection ahead of 2027. His renewed engagements across states signal a broader attempt to consolidate alliances and reshape opposition politics in the coming election cycle.

With Nigeria’s political climate already heating up, Obi’s message in Akwa Ibom underscores a central theme likely to dominate the 2027 campaign: trust in the ballot and accountability at the polling unit.
