The House of Representatives has approved the establishment of a Federal Medical Centre in Ikwuano, Abia State, following the consideration of a legislative report presented during plenary on March 12, 2026.

The bill seeking the creation of the new medical facility was sponsored by Obinna Aguocha, the member representing Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The proposed law aims to amend the Federal Medical Centres Act to formally establish the Federal Medical Centre, Ikwuano.

During the plenary session, lawmakers reviewed the report submitted by the House Committee on Health Institutions and subsequently adopted its recommendations.

With the approval, the bill has moved a significant step forward in the legislative process required to create the new federal health institution in the state.

The report on the bill, identified as HB 1605, had earlier been laid before the House on October 14, 2025. Following deliberations, members of the House voted in favor of the committee’s recommendations, paving the way for the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre in Ikwuano, a development expected to strengthen healthcare delivery in Abia State and surrounding communities.

Reacting to the progress of the bill, Aguocha expressed gratitude and described the approval as a major milestone for the people of Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency. He noted that the proposed medical centre would contribute significantly to improving access to quality healthcare services and medical infrastructure in the region.

Aguocha currently serves as Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation of all Standing and Ad-Hoc Committees in the 10th National Assembly. He reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing policies and projects aimed at improving the welfare and development of his constituency.
