Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has cried out over what he described as life-threatening health challenges while in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
In a strongly worded letter to the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kanu detailed several medical conditions he is battling, warning that neglect could lead to a stroke, collapse, or sudden death.

According to him, the gravest health threat he faces is tinnitus, a constant ringing in the ears that worsens his hypertension, robs him of sleep, and heightens the risk of cardiac complications. He also listed other conditions, including diseases affecting the liver, pancreas, kidney, bladder, and prostate, as well as sleep apnea and white matter disease.
“Among the gravest threats to my survival today is tinnitus. The incessant chirping in my ears robs me of sleep, exacerbates hypertension, and magnifies chest pain and fainting risks,” Kanu stated.
Allegations Against DSS Medical Team
Kanu further accused DSS medical personnel of medical negligence and falsification of records. He alleged that Dr. Nasiru Mohammed, a DSS doctor, recorded false test results, including potassium levels, while prescribing drugs inconsistent with his actual condition.
He said under the DSS’s medical supervision, he continued to suffer recurrent nosebleeds, fainting spells, chest pains, swelling of the feet, and debilitating headaches.
“Over 50 blood samples have been taken, yet no real improvement in my health has been achieved under DSS-appointed doctors,” he claimed.
Intervention by Personal Doctors Blocked
The IPOB leader also accused the DSS of barring his longtime personal physician, Dr. Cfine, from treating him and intimidating him into silence. He credited Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, a globally respected surgeon, for stepping in to prevent a total health collapse.
Kanu said under the care of Dr. Cfine and Prof. Aghaji, he recorded modest improvements in potassium levels, reduced nosebleeds, and fewer fainting episodes. However, tinnitus and other systemic health challenges continue to make his condition “unbearable.”
He warned that the DSS’s neglect of his medical needs amounts to “reckless disregard for life,” urging urgent medical intervention to save him from what he fears could become a sudden death in custody.
