In a significant leadership transition at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), May Agbamuche-Mbu, a serving National Commissioner, has officially assumed the role of Acting Chairman.
This development follows the formal handover of duties from Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who has commenced his terminal leave ahead of the completion of his tenure.

Agbamuche-Mbu, who represents Delta State on the INEC board, is expected to oversee the commission’s activities pending the appointment of a substantive chairman. Her assumption of office marks a crucial period for the electoral body as it continues preparations for upcoming elections and ongoing electoral reforms.

The transition ensures the continuity of INEC’s operations and underscores the commission’s commitment to maintaining stability and transparency in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Professor Yakubu, who has led INEC since 2015, is widely credited with spearheading several electoral reforms, including the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and electronic result transmission.
As Agbamuche-Mbu steps into her new role, stakeholders across the political spectrum are keenly watching how she will steer the commission in the coming months.
